Christians sometimes use the word deliverance for God’s rescue from temptation, oppression, destructive patterns, fear, danger, or spiritual attack. A biblical approach keeps Jesus Christ and the gospel central rather than creating fear around demons or treating prayer as a magical formula.
Begin With the Gospel
Colossians 1:13–14 says God has rescued believers from the domain of darkness and brought them into the kingdom of His beloved Son. Christian freedom begins with belonging to Christ.
Submit to God and Resist Evil
James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Submission to God comes before resistance. Repentance, truth, obedience, and faith are central.
Reject Fear and Deception
Spiritual warfare often involves lies, temptation, accusation, and fear. Ephesians 6:10–18 directs believers toward truth, righteousness, faith, salvation, Scripture, and prayer.
A Biblical Prayer for Deliverance
Father, I belong to Jesus Christ and depend on His saving work. Forgive my sin and help me turn away from everything contrary to Your will. Expose lies I have believed and renew my mind through Your Word. Strengthen me against temptation and fear. Give me wisdom to remove harmful influences and courage to seek help where needed. Fill me with Your Spirit and help me walk in truth, holiness, love, and freedom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Use Wisdom When Problems Have Other Causes
Not every struggle is caused by spiritual attack. Trauma, mental illness, addiction, relationship problems, and medical conditions may require qualified professional care alongside prayer and pastoral support. If someone is at risk of harming themselves or others, seek emergency help immediately.
