Choir Ministry
Lifting Up Praises Through Anointed Music and Worship
There is a moment in every service at CCC Bilehou Oshoffa Miracle Land Parish when the atmosphere shifts — when ordinary singing becomes something else entirely, when the room fills with a weight that can only be described as the presence of God. That moment does not happen by accident. It is carried, week after week, by the men, women, and young people of our Choir Ministry.
As a parish of the Celestial Church of Christ — a global Pentecostal body founded in 1947 by Prophet Samuel Bilehou Joseph Oshoffa in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic, and now present in over 100 nations — our Choir Ministry inherits a deep tradition of worship that blends reverence, order, and Spirit-led praise. At Miracle Land Parish in Chicago, this tradition is alive every week, from the early morning Seekers Service on Wednesday to the Lord’s Day Glorious Service on Sunday, and at every special gathering in between.
This page tells the full story of our Choir Ministry: what we believe about worship, what choir life actually looks like week to week, who this ministry is for, and how you can become part of it.
The Biblical Foundation of Worship Through Music
Music has been woven into the fabric of true worship since the earliest pages of Scripture. Psalm 150:3-5 calls the people of God to praise Him “with the sound of the trumpet… with the psaltery and harp… with the timbrel and dance… with stringed instruments and organs… upon the loud cymbals.” Worship in song is not decoration around the “real” service — it is itself an act of obedience and spiritual warfare.
Psalm 100:2 instructs believers to “serve the LORD with gladness: come before his presence with singing,” while Colossians 3:16 calls the church to teach and admonish one another “in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” Our Choir Ministry takes both of these charges seriously. We do not sing merely to fill time before the sermon; we sing to usher the congregation into an encounter with the living God, and to teach sound doctrine through the very words we lift up.
Perhaps most powerfully, 2 Chronicles 20:21-22 records that when King Jehoshaphat sent the singers ahead of the army — praising God before the battle was even fought — the Lord set ambushes against the enemy and secured victory for Israel. Our choir ministers from this same conviction: that praise is a weapon, that worship precedes breakthrough, and that when the singers go out ahead in faith, God moves on behalf of His people.
What the Choir Ministry Does Each Week
The Choir Ministry is active at every regular service on our calendar. At the Wednesday Seekers Service (9:00 AM), the choir sets a tone of expectant morning worship. At the Wednesday Mercy Day Service (6:00 PM), their ministration often accompanies testimonies of God’s mercy and intervention. During the Thursday New Moon Service, held every first Thursday at 10:00 PM, the choir leads extended worship that carries the congregation into deep intercession as the new month begins.
On Fridays, the choir ministers at both the Prophets & Prophetess Service at noon — where prophetic ministration often flows directly out of anointed praise — and the Power Day Service in the evening. And of course, the Sunday Lord’s Day Glorious Service at 10:00 AM is where the full choir typically ministers with the most robust arrangement of voices and instrumentation, opening the main worship experience of the week.
Beyond the weekly rhythm, the Choir Ministry plays a central role in our major yearly events: the Juvenile Harvest every first Sunday in June, the Adult Harvest every second Sunday in July, our Anniversary Thanksgiving Service, and extended prayer and revival programs such as the 21 Days of Overflowing Grace. These larger gatherings often call for expanded choir arrangements, guest musicians, and rehearsed special numbers that reflect the theme of the season — such as the “Overflowing Grace” theme celebrated in our recent anniversary programs.
Behind the scenes, choir life involves regular rehearsal, vocal training, and — for many members — instruction in reading music, learning harmonies, and developing an ear for the traditional Celestial Church of Christ hymnody alongside contemporary gospel sound. Rehearsals are not only musical practice; they are also times of prayer, fellowship, and spiritual preparation, because our choir members understand that what they carry into the sanctuary must first be cultivated in their own private walk with God.
Blending Tradition and Contemporary Worship
One of the distinguishing marks of the Choir Ministry at CCC Bilehou Oshoffa Miracle Land Parish is our commitment to honoring both the rich musical heritage of the Celestial Church of Christ and the contemporary gospel sound that speaks to today’s worshippers — including the many young people and families growing up in our congregation.
This means a typical service might move seamlessly from a traditional Yoruba praise chorus rooted in our denomination’s Beninese and Nigerian heritage, into a contemporary gospel anthem familiar from radio and streaming platforms, and back into a call-and-response hymn that has been sung in Celestial Church of Christ parishes for generations. This musical range requires versatility from every choir member, and it is part of what makes joining this ministry such a rich experience of growth — not just spiritually, but musically and culturally as well.
Who the Choir Ministry Is For
You do not need to be a professional vocalist to belong to the Choir Ministry. What matters most is a heart surrendered to worship and a willingness to grow. Our choir welcomes:
- Trained vocalists who want to use formal musical training in service to God
- Natural singers with a good ear and a hunger to learn
- Instrumentalists — keyboardists, drummers, guitarists, and percussionists — who want to add their gift to the worship team
- Young people and teenagers eager to serve and grow into leadership within the ministry
- Beginners who have never sung publicly but feel a pull toward worship ministry and are willing to be trained
Age is not a barrier here. We have members of the Choir Ministry ranging from teenagers just discovering their voice to elders who have led worship for decades. What unites everyone is a shared conviction that music is a sacred trust, not a performance, and that every rehearsal and every service is an opportunity to grow closer to God while helping others do the same.
A Week in the Life of a Choir Member
For most members, choir life begins with personal preparation — prayer, practicing assigned parts, and listening to reference recordings during the week. Rehearsals are typically scheduled ahead of major services, where the choir director leads vocal warm-ups, works through harmonies section by section (soprano, alto, tenor, bass), and rehearses the specific song set planned for the upcoming service.
On service day, choir members typically arrive early to review the order of service, pray together as a team, and settle into their designated positions before the congregation arrives. During the service itself, choir members are attentive not only to their vocal parts but to the spiritual atmosphere in the room — ready to extend a song, slow a tempo, or shift into spontaneous worship if the Holy Spirit is clearly moving in a particular direction. This sensitivity is something every new member is mentored in, because it is what separates a choir that simply performs music from a choir that truly leads worship.
After the service, many choir members stay for a brief debrief — celebrating what went well, discussing what to adjust, and praying for specific needs that arose during the ministration, whether a member was visibly moved to tears, a visitor responded to an altar call during worship, or a testimony emerged connected to something sung that day.
Growing Within the Ministry
The Choir Ministry is intentional about developing its members over time, not simply using them as instruments for a Sunday performance. New members typically begin by learning the existing repertoire and blending their voice within a section. As confidence and skill grow, members are given opportunities to take lead vocal parts, contribute to song selection, and eventually mentor newer members joining the ministry.
For those with a deeper calling toward music leadership, the ministry offers pathways into roles such as section leader, worship team coordinator, or eventually assistant choir director — always under the guidance and blessing of the parish’s pastoral leadership. This growth path reflects our belief that ministry gifts are meant to be stewarded and developed over a lifetime, not simply utilized in the moment.
The Impact of Anointed Worship
It is easy to underestimate what happens in a congregation when worship is done with excellence and spiritual sensitivity. Members of Miracle Land Parish regularly testify that a particular song, sung at exactly the right moment, was the turning point in their week — the moment grief lifted, faith rose, or clarity came for a decision they had been wrestling with. Visitors who walk through our doors for the first time often say the same: that the worship alone told them this was a house where God’s presence truly dwells.
This is the quiet but profound impact of the Choir Ministry — not applause, not performance, but transformed hearts. Every rehearsal, every early Sunday morning warm-up, and every hour spent learning a new arrangement is ultimately in service of that single goal: helping the people of God encounter Him more fully through song.
Instruments, Sound, and the Ministry Behind the Music
Worship at Miracle Land Parish is carried not only by voices but by the instrumentalists who provide the rhythmic and harmonic foundation beneath every song. Keyboardists set the tonal center for a service, often the first to sense whether a moment calls for a full, driving praise tempo or a slower, more reflective worship tone. Drummers and percussionists carry the pulse that moves a congregation from seated stillness into standing, hands-raised praise. Guitarists add texture and depth, particularly during contemporary gospel arrangements that draw younger members of the congregation into deeper engagement with worship.
Behind these musicians sits a dedicated sound and technical team, often considered an extension of the Choir Ministry itself, responsible for ensuring that every voice and instrument is heard clearly throughout the sanctuary — a responsibility that, while technical, carries real spiritual weight. A service where the sound is muddled or a microphone fails at a critical moment can disrupt the very atmosphere the choir has worked to build. For this reason, technical volunteers are trained not merely in equipment operation, but in sensitivity to the flow and needs of a live worship setting.
Together, vocalists, instrumentalists, and sound technicians form a single, coordinated body — each member essential to the whole, much as 1 Corinthians 12 describes the body of Christ itself, with many parts working together for a single purpose. Anyone with technical audio skills, instrumental ability, or simply a willingness to learn any of these supporting roles is warmly invited to explore how their specific gift might fit within the broader work of the Choir Ministry.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to audition to join the Choir Ministry? There is no formal audition required to begin. New members are invited to attend a rehearsal, where the choir director will assess vocal range and fit within a section, and every willing heart is given a place to grow.
Do I need to read music to join? No. While musical literacy is a helpful skill that the ministry can help you develop over time, many of our most effective choir members learned entirely by ear and repetition.
Can children and teenagers join? Yes. Younger members are welcomed and often begin in coordination with our Youth & Children’s ministry before transitioning fully into the main choir as they mature.
How often does the choir rehearse? Rehearsal schedules are set around the church calendar and are typically most intensive ahead of major events like the Harvest celebrations and Anniversary Thanksgiving Service, with regular rehearsals throughout the year to prepare for weekly services.
