The phrase “born again” comes directly from Jesus’ conversation with Nicodemus in John 3. Jesus was not describing physical rebirth or merely becoming more religious. He was describing the spiritual new birth that God gives.
Jesus and Nicodemus
Nicodemus was a respected religious teacher, yet Jesus told him, “You must be born again” (John 3:7). Religious knowledge and outward morality could not replace the need for spiritual life.
Born of the Spirit
John 3:5–8 emphasizes the work of the Spirit. The new birth is God’s transforming work in a person, producing new spiritual life and a new relationship with Him.
New Creation
Second Corinthians 5:17 describes anyone in Christ as a new creation. This does not mean instant perfection. It means a decisive new identity and direction that begins to produce transformed desires and conduct.
How Is the New Birth Received?
The surrounding context of John 3 points to faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:14–18). We do not manufacture regeneration; we repent, believe the gospel, and depend on God’s mercy.
Signs of New Life
Scripture points toward growing love for God, obedience to Christ, love for other believers, conviction about sin, perseverance in faith, and the fruit of the Spirit. Growth may be gradual, but new life has a new direction.
